To begin my post, I want to emphasize the importance of being cautious when it comes to personal information and finances by stating, "Trust nothing and nobody."
In today's society, security is crucial, as it encompasses various aspects of our lives, from shopping to business to medicine.
Recently, my mother and I had an encounter with scammers that provided us with firsthand experience and an opportunity to interact with them.
It is disheartening to see that these fraudulent practices continue to affect people. However, situations like these will persist as long as human beings exist.
Despite this, I would like to summarize our experience: My mother creates handmade collectible dolls, which we advertised on #OLX.kz and received a request from a woman named Diana in Karaganda. Although she provided a photo of her ID, we became suspicious of her motives. Luckily, my mother has a well-developed sense of deception and personal security, which I helped train her on.
The scammer requested my mother's full name and phone number to create phishing pages and sent a link for "receiving payment." I used an isolated VM to investigate further, and after analyzing the results from various open-source tools, I was able to identify the IP address, VDS hosting company, ISP, and domain owner. I contacted all the relevant companies, informing them that their services were being used for fraudulent purposes.
As a result, the hosts involved were shut down. However, this is just one small step towards solving the larger problem.
Additional measures are necessary to minimize the prevalence of such fraudulent activities, which I will discuss in a future post.
